Defining Magick & How it Helped Me Gain My Power Back
What is magick and why has it gained in popularity so much? You may have seen something on TikTok or Instagram and maybe that led you here. This isn’t the type of stuff you see in Harry Potter or Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Magick is the practice of using the energy forces and environment around you to bring about change in your own life. The other type of magic with just the ‘C’ is stage magic that you will see a magician perform for entertainment purposes. For the sake of this blog post for beginners, I will only be scratching the surface of what magick is and I will only be touching on the topics of using it for yourself in a positive and safe way. This will also be from my perspective, which isn't going to be the only way either. It's up to you to make it yours with how you practice. I can also guarantee that what I discuss will be inclusive for everyone. I think it’s important for everyone to have access to these resources and I strive to make sure that everyone is included. When it comes to practices with different cultural, religious, and spiritual traditions, please be mindful of those traditions especially if they are closed traditions, unless they belong to you and your culture/religion, ancestral lineage, etc. The most important thing is finding what feels right for you. This can be found by researching your ancestors and seeing what they practiced or delving into the more accessible resources that are welcome to everyone that you can find here at Moon Magick.
Like with any type of practice, there are deviations and other routes you can go when using magick, but those are things that you can learn on your own if it interests you. You can practice different types of magick without calling it magick, you can be a witch, or you can choose to not identify as a witch. Ultimately, you will want to do what you’re most comfortable with and use your own judgement as to what you will accept into your life or not. This also goes for how much time and money you put into it. It is very possible to not spend any money and still benefit from your practice whereas there will be people who will spend as much money as they want if that’s what makes them happy and connected to their practice. I believe it’s important to educate yourself first and find what calls to you before making any decisions or big investments in anything you choose to do in your life. You will also want to use your best judgement when spending money as well. Be aware of anything that seems too good to be true, someone trying to sell you something that isn't tangible, or anything that just doesn't feel right. For example, everything you need to practice can be typically be found in nature and someone casting a spell for you is something I have always been weary about because it should be your own personal journey.
In my personal journey with magick, it has brought me closer to my spirituality and has helped me with my mental health tremendously. I grew up Catholic and I was always passionate about nature, rocks, crystals, angels, and I have always been extremely intuitive, for as long as I can remember. As I got older the empathetic and intuitive side of me became something that I had a hard time managing which resulted in a deep depression at a very young age. Growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s there wasn’t much information surrounding mental health and self-care because it was still seen as taboo and something a lot of us didn’t talk about. I wasn’t sure why I was feeling this way, but I just knew that I felt everything so deeply whether it be my own emotions or emotions of someone else and I just had this knowing that almost felt like a curse to me. I had friends but over the years it was always come and go which made me feel like I was just a stop at a train station for people to unload their baggage and then carry on with their lives. When I was in high school and going into college, I started to do my own research (thanks to LiveJournal, Tumblr, myspace) and realized that these feelings I had were not only affecting me but also so many others and that’s when I learned about being an Empath and Intuitive. Throughout college and all during my 20’s I learned so much and I had what felt like two different spiritual awakenings that were also like two huge transitions in my life that felt like everything was falling apart but it was actually just getting rid of the things I didn’t need anymore. There could be a lot more said with this, but that would be for another blog post, or you can always comment below on this post if you have specific questions. I am now 32 and with the help of modern medicine like therapy regularly and my own self care practice using different aspects of magick, I am feeling much more in control of my life and when things do get bad, I am able to handle them and be resilient and not let things spiral out of control. I have also learned a lot more about myself from different perspectives in regards to astrology & human design which I will be talking about in my next blog post.
I go to a therapist regularly and I even take a dialectical behavioral therapy class every week to learn more about coping mechanisms, mindfulness, and conflict resolution. My therapist is well aware of my practice and supports it because when you look deeper into it, the different rituals are similar to mindfulness exercises you would do in a mental health capacity. I suffer from depression and anxiety while also having ADHD, but I work hard to not let any of those things stop me from living the life that I know that I want. Over time I have learned that not everything needs to be positive, sunshine and rainbows. I have learned that through therapy and my use of magick that you have to take the bad with the good because both of them are going to teach you something. Magick isn’t the cure all for everyone, and it definitely won’t work for everyone which is why it’s up to you to decide if it's right for you. In my personal experience, it has given me something I never found with traditional religion. It gave me the peace and freedom to be who I am while focusing on nature, humanitarianism, and my mental health. I wouldn’t trade my practice for the world, and I am passionate about helping others by giving them guidance if they are looking for it.
I am in no way an expert and I won’t always have the answers, but I can tell you that if you seek them within yourself and continue to do what feels right to you, that they will come to you in the way they are meant to. Magick is and can be a lot of things and in my opinion there really isn't an exact right or wrong way. You will find that there are people who think differently than this, but if you do your own research and keep good intentions, I don't think you can really do anything wrong.
